Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

It’s funny how life turns out. When I was young I wanted to have six children. As it happens, I have none but I do have six godchildren, five girls and a boy, who give me much pleasure. This year’s annual pantomime trip for my Gloucestershire goddaughter, Emily and her twin brothers, Harry and Hugh, had to be delayed until virtually Easter but it was worth the wait to see Mary Poppins. We were entranced by the set effortlessly transforming from the interior of 17 Cherry Tree Lane to the park with its wrought iron gates and lively statues to the rooftops with chimneys glistening in the moonlight. We hooted with laughter when the kitchen descended into absolute chaos whilst the cook was out. We were cheered and impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the chimneysweeps’ dance, particularly when one of them walked vertically up the side of the stage, continued upside-down along the top and then back down the other side. We were amazed when Mary Poppins, holding her umbrella of course, literally flew high above the audience. The ice creams in the interval were jolly good too.

Mary Poppins was flying home when she thought she would stop for the night as it was getting late. She dropped into a little pension.
" Goodness me, Mary Poppins" said the desk clerk. "Do you want a room for the night?"
" Yes please" said Mary," and could you send some supper up to my room?"
" Certainly,what would you like?"
" Cauliflower cheese would be nice" said Mary. " Oh, and two poached eggs for breakfast?"
" Certainly,Mary Poppins"
Next morning as she was checking out, the clerk asked her
"And did you sleep all right?"
" Absolutely" said Mary," and the Caaliflower cheese was excellent. Not too sure about the eggs though"
"Oh dear," said the clerk " Would you like to leave a note in our complaints book?" Mary agreed and took the book.
After a moments thought she scribbled quickly, gave the book back, and flew off.
The clerk opened the book and read
"SUPER CAULIFOWER CHEESE BUT EGGS WERE QUITE ATROCIOUS"

I can't follow that joke !

I'm sure Mary Poppins was great, but I have never seen the film version, as the Dick van Dyke 'cockerney' accent grates so much.

It is a tough job to get me to see any musicals these days, having seen too many abysmal Andrew Lloyd Webber ones. Even Les Miserables was lost on me, I'm afraid. And why would you want to ruin a perfectly good opera like 'Madame Butterfly' by turning it into 'Miss Saigon'?

That said, I was impressed by 'Tommy' when it was resurrected about 10 years ago in the West End.

Despite my cynicism, I did listen to a couple of R4 documentaries on musicals and was surprised to learn that 'The Sound of Music' was based on a true story, which I'm afraid I had never appreciated. And in Mary Poppins 'Feed the Birds [tuppence a bag]' does have a timeless message that doing good needn't cost much.

Perhaps with summer coming up, when 'ratings' tend to drop with holidays and so on, you need a ruse to boost visitor numbers ?

What about 'blog swap' where you swap places with, say, Mutterings and Meanderings for a week, and Wifey oop North for another week, while they live in the land of the Winchester Whisperer ??

It could work, especially if you manage to persuade Welshcakes that Winchester is one of the few cities in Britain that is as historic as Italy ??

Sorry, King Lear, I forgot to include you as a potential 'blog swap' for the summer. I'm sure that WW could be a property developer for a week, while you manage her hedges in return..

I think I'd be better at developing property than guest blogging and the King's Transylvanian hideaway does sound a jolly jaunt for the summer. Markets are quiet then as well so he could short a few British Gas if the SNP wins the election or put on a few pair trades in Scottish & Southern and Scottish Power.

OOhh..sounds like dullsville to me.

You'd be better practising those flying skills - that would REALLY impress your godchildren...
