The H word

Having first said that his Government would be humbler than Tony Blair's, Gordon Brown said yesterday he was "truly humbled" by the overwhelming support for his leadership from Labour MPs. He's beginning to sound like Uriah Heep.

Have a look at today's Simon Hoggart sketch for an interesting take on this.. I also notice that Hilary Benn is getting on the Humility bandwagon.

There is a small book to be written about words whose meaning is being destroyed by management consultants and politicians.

One that really jars is where a pilot for, say, a new IT system has been run and they say, 'We will take the learnings forward into the rollout'.

Ugh! It is only because a perfectly respectable phrase - 'Lessons have been learnt' - is now seen to have negative connotations, since many politicians use this to describe something which has been an unmitigated disaster...

Ah, yes, who could forget Uriah Heep.

Not as good as Led Zeppelin though.

Let us hope he is more sincere at least, and less greedy

Of course they are humble. Brown has all the traits and characteristics of Uriah Heap - cowardice, combined with control freskery ( if that's a word). Despite the " we won't spin" message, they already have ( see? we don't care if the teleprompt gets in the way)
Yech!

Uriah Heep is a good description! I listened to an interview with H Benn on Sky this morning. I usually find him bearable but he has gone really miserable! Is he going to be the Dour one now that Gordy is smiling?
