Ming the Merciless

He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword, or, in the case of the LibDems, the knife in the back. I must say that I am not a fan of a Party system which asks all its members to vote for a leader and then forces him to resign a few months later without a vote of no confidence from the entire membership. The same is true for the Conservatives who forced out IDS. Courtesy does not figure highly in politics, which is perhaps one of the reasons that people are so cynical about it. With GB, we have the opposite situation: the people voted for the Labour Party with TB as its leader, and we all know that, when it came to the crunch, GB didn't have the guts to ask for a personal mandate. He simply pooh-poohed the idea, claiming that he had never intended to call an election anyway. Ho hum. Where are the heroes of yesteryear?
p.s. The bloggers lunch will be in London at 12.30pm on Thursday 15 November so please let me know if you'd like to attend.

I tend to agree with you, but I think the damage to the party would be immense. The right way is the process that brought DC to the Leadership.
And where are the heroes? Nowhere. Noone dare not cover their backside - not something VC winners tend to do.

Funnily enough, I'm reading Supreme Courage by General Sir Peter de la Billiere about VC winners. Have you read it?

Kinglear, heroes are what we need, our leaders should inspire.

I have added the lunch date in my diary. How shall we recognise each other?

Right, it is in my diary. Do we ask for "the bloggers' table" when we arrive?

Excellent! I'll put WITN on the guest list at the door and see you in the Wellington Room on the first floor for lunch.

Gosh this is exciting! My only slight worry is that I might be the only - ehem - non-female there. Sigh.

No no WW, I am more than happy to be the token male! BTW, I haven't read that particular book, but because of my involvement with the Gurkha Welfare Trust I have read the book about all their VCs. The extraordinary thing is, that, to a man, they do it for their " mates"

WW, Thank you for arranging it, kinglear wants to be pampered by the sound of it. And why not?

"Courtesy does not figure highly in politics, which is perhaps one of the reasons that people are so cynical about it." Oh, pleeeeaase WW ?! I have just been to see Richard Wilson 'Whipping it up' so forgive me if I express some scepticism about the idea that politics has ever been, or could ever be, about courtesy...

Too borassic for the 'blogger's lunch' at present [it's a tough life being a man of leisure, but the best things in life repay the effort] and anyway I'm too bloody lazy to have a blog. But situation may change in the next year when, failing the appearance of a hugely wealthy woman to keep me in the manner to which I'd like to become accustomed, I may choose to seek gainful employment again..

Toodle pip !

ellee - surely you should wear a rose, carry a copy of the Pink 'Un and say something like 'When the seagulls follow the ship..' and when WW finishes the quote, you know you have your quarry ?

Poor old Ming! - just too nice for the job, I think. What a lot of backstabbers.
