The old Punch cartoons were the best and especially pointed. I don't know what was happening in 1877 in September but it was probably that France was NOT committing to a course of action over something, and Mr. Punch thought it pusillanimous...
I have a wonderful book, a collection of 'Punch' drawings from when it is first started, printed in 1891. It's timeless. I'm afraid I have vandalised it and framed a couple of my favourites, but I would be more than happy to frame far more.
