A rum thing

You know that ubiquitous hand sanitiser gel that became very popular after the outbreak of swine flu? My prison visiting friend tells me it has been banned from her prison because the inmates were mixing it with rum essence and water to make rather good cocktails!

Your posts are becoming increasingly alarming. Must be a sign of my advancing age. Is it common knowledge that in this day and age prisoners have access to rum essence ? Come to that how does rum essence difer from rum ?

But there's no alcohol in Dettol, is there?

Sorry to alarm you, Angus! Rum essence is food flavouring and contains no alcohol so visitors may give it to prisoners.

I remember being told when very young that "closes" in Edinburgh had to keep their doors locked overnight to prevent "Jakies" creating a nauseating cocktail.
It consisted of breaking off the mantles on the hall gas lights, and bubbling the gas through the milk bottles which had been left for the occupants.
Apparently it didn't taste of much but it induced instantaneous inebriate for about 30 seconds - and then complete coma for several hours

Oh! Well plenty of rum essence & lime juice could disguise that?
